RCCESI hosts workshop on applied statistics for undergrads

The Research Center on Culture Education and Social Issues will hold a workshop entitled “Introducing Applied Statistics to Undergraduate Students”, along with the University’s Faculty Members, on May 17, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC).
The keynote speaker for this workshop is Associate Professor Margaret Dechman, Ph D (Anthropology & Sociology, School of Arts and Social Sciences), from Cape Breto University, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her primary objective is to provide opportunities to work with datasets that offer topics of relevance to the participants’ every day lives. Also, Dechman will walk through various steps involved in introducing the participants to applied statistical methods with the use of SPSS to zero-down a large international database.
Topics which will be discussed include: problems to be expected when using publically available datasets; improving efficiency through usage of syntax files, assisting students with developing uni-variate and multi-variate concepts through data transformations standardized scoring and Cronbach’s Alpha; using classroom games to help students understand descriptive and inferential statistics; introducing the logic of control variables; and providing a foundation for understanding multivariate analyses.
Also participating in the workshop are representatives from various universities and institutions from all over the country.
