Aperocho, BEEd-SpEd, joins organizing team of Special Olympics Asia Pacific GenUin Youth Summit, Singapore

As a Special Olympics GenUin Youth Leader representing the Philippines, Cherish Aperocho, Bachelor Elementary Education, major in Special Education senior at the and President of the Guild of Thomasian SpEducators of the College of Education,  together with Brina Maxino and Isabela Montaña, served as part of the organizing team for the Special Olympics Asia-Pacific GenUin Youth Summit in Singapore, held from March 19-20, 2016. From the GenUin Social Impact Summit that happened last July 2015 in Los Angeles, they brought the summit to the Singaporean community, in a bid to making their community inclusive for people with exceptionalities.
Aperocho served as a speaker/facilitator on the session about Intellectual Disabilities. After a series of experiential activities, the Singaporean participants created their own projects to make their communities more inclusive. She and her colleagues likewise served as mentors to the promising Singaporean participants in developing their project ideas.
Special Olympics Asia Pacific recognizes the active and important role that young people with and without intellectual disabilities can play in achieving the long-term goals of inclusion, acceptance and respect for people with intellectual disabilities. It hopes to tap on the leadership potential of young people with and without intellectual disabilities, drawing on their individual skills and strengths to create classroom and community activities to foster genuine friendships and positive behavioral change among people with and without intellectual disabilities in schools and communities across Singapore.
