PolSci, Grad. School, Kaya Natin Movement confer first Sonia R. Lorenzo Award upon La Union’s Ortega

The Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, in collaboration with The Political Science Forum, UST Graduate School – Public Administration and Political Science cluster, and Kaya Natin Movement, conferred the first Sonia R. Lorenzo Award for Women in Leadership and Governance to Ms. Mary Jane Ortega, the former Mayor of San Fernando City, La Union. The presentation of the award was held at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex, last December 7, 2015.
Conceived after the ideals of the late Sonia R. Lorenzo, who was the former mayor of San Isidro, Nueva Ecija, the eponymous award took recognition of the exemplary leadership by women in local governance. In addition, the core values and principles of St. Thomas Aquinas served as the basis for the selection of the recipient of the award. The recipient of the award, Mayor Mary Jane Ortega, like the late Mayor Sonia R. Lorenzo, is also known for her good governance and ethical leadership as evidenced by the numerous local and international awards she received during and after her time in public service. 
The selection of the winner was made through series of screening that were conducted by panelists namely, Dr. Dennis Coronacion, Chair of UST Department of Political Science; Atty. Bong Lopez, Law Professor and Project Coordinator of UST; Among Eddie Panlilio, Founder and Chairman of Kaya Natin! Movement; and Mr. Jess Lorenzo, son of the late Sonia Lorenzo.  Dr. Edwin Martin of UST Graduate School and Mr. Ronald Castillo of the Department of Political Science also joined the panel for preliminary screening. Among the finalists were Taytay, Rizal Mayor Janet de Leon-Mercado, Santiago City Councilor Arlene Jane Alvarez-Reyes, Baguio City Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda, and Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte Mayor Evelyn Tang-Uy.
