The UST Simbahayan Community Development Office, in partnership with the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM), College of Commerce and Business Administration, AMV-College of Accountancy (AMV-COA), Conservatory of Music, Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA), and College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD), organized the annual Pistang Tomas last January 25 – 29, 2016 as part of the celebration of Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas and continuing activity of the community development office of the University.
With the theme, “KKK: Kaunlarang Pang Kultura at Kabuhayan”, Pistang Tomas aimed to provide an opportunity and avenue for the Thomasian community, University partner communities and institutions, and other stakeholders to meet and collaborate in various programs and projects on the areas of employment and social enterprise development, as well as in culture, heritage and sports development.
CTHM as the lead college, co-organized the “Mabuhay Project”, a three-day livelihood skills training on Traditional Pinoy Hilot, and Fruit Preservation and Meat Processing participated by 50 community members from Ministry of Urban Poor, Diocese of Caloocan; Dagat-dagatan Navotas City; and Santissimo Rosario Parish. CTHM also hosted “Kapihan sa Maynila“, a meeting with partner industries; “Kaluto Cooking Showdown”; and “Pamana ng Lahi” walking tour in Intramuros and Binondo, Manila.
The College of Commerce and Business Administration co-organized a week-long “Community Trade Fair” in which local products of 21 partner communities and institutions were showcased and sold to the Thomasian community.
AMV-COA co-organized the ‘Advocacy Forum and Research Colloquium’ on the second day of Pistang Tomas. The Advocacy Forum focused on Livelihood Sustainability while, students and faculty members participated in the Research Colloquium were community-based projects and research studies were presented.
A ‘Concert at the Park’ was also organized by the Conservatory of Music on the 2nd day of Pistang Tomas in which over 60 performers and singers participated in the event. IPEA also organized an ‘Araw ng Palarong Pinoy’ on the third day wherein more than 100 students showcased various Philippine Games at the UST Quadri Centennial Park.
CFAD was this year’s partner in Pistang Tomas venue design, physical arrangement and set-up.
The annual Pistang Tomas started in 2002 as a trade fair event of then, Office of Community Development. Today, it is a collaborative activity of UST Simbahayan and various colleges in UST emphasizing the importance of culture in livelihood development.
