Tenedero of English presents paper in international conference on accounting education

Assistant Professor Pia Patricia Tenedero, who has been teaching English courses in the UST-AMV College of Accountancy for the past seven years, presented her study titled “Accounting students’ perspective of work-relevant communication skills: Evidence from a Philippine university.” The study reports that final-year accounting students in UST perceive interview skills and reading as highly important for employment in audit firms. However, they think that writing and listening are not as important in their target workplace. Interestingly, students’ and practitioners’ views of these two skills are critically divergent, thus, emphasizing the need to reprioritize them in the language instruction provided to accounting majors. The study, therefore, recommends incorporating an English for Accountants course in the new accounting curriculum.
Filipino and Malaysian participants in the conference were very receptive to the suggestion of aligning language instruction with industry practices to help make accounting students industry-ready when they graduate. The NACPAE delegates expressed interest in advocating this curricular change in their respective universities. By this measure it can be said that the conference was a success as it provided an important avenue for knowledge sharing and promotion of relevant curricular innovation.
