Ms. Erika Mae Valencia, a sociology major from the Faculty of Arts and Letters, participated in the 3 rd Asia-Pacific Student Forum held at Universitas Indonesia in Jakarta from September 17 to 19, 2015. In this gathering of students from Asia and the Pacific, Valencia, together with four other attendees, presented their project proposals during the conference's major session called Action-Based Forum. Framed under the concept Act of Random Kindness , or ARK, the project was written by Valencia and was presented by her group consisted of Nike Ndaumanu from Indonesia, Ramlan Fuad of Malaysia, and fellow Filipino, Michelle Tiu. This proposal aims to address the problem of poverty that is attributed to the lack of education among agriculturists and entrepreneurs.
In this project proposal, Valencia designed that a non-government organization will implement a five-phase solution to the problem, namely: (1) profiling, (2) on-site research and hands-on experience, (3) dialogue between farmers and middlemen, (4) orientation and training of horticulturist and middlemen, and (5) monitoring and evaluation. This requires the application to a chosen community which is the Village Ramea, West Java, Indonesia. After implementation, the five-phase solution must translate to a sustainable development and a dynamic social movement of the Village Ramea.
