Fr. Abogado of CRSE, JHS publishes book on Hilary of Poitiers

Fr. Jannel N. Abogado, O.P., Director of UST Center for Religious Studies and Ethics and Regent of UST Junior High School, published a book entitled, Hilary of Poitiers on Conciliating the Homouseans and the HomoeouseansAn Inquiry on the Fourth-Century Trinitarian Controversy at the Peter Lang International Academic Publishers. The monograph centers on Hilary of Poiters and the role he played in reconciling the homouseans and the homoeouseans, two ecclesiastical parties which, although employed different theological formulae to express their respective understanding of the nature of the Son in relation to God the Father, were demonstrated by the bishop to have the same fundamental conviction with regard to the divinity of the Son.
The work revisits the arguments offered by recent studies on the issue and analyzes the primary sources to assert confidently that Hilary did not compromise the Nicene confession. One review of the work applauds it for two reasons: First, it contributes “to the revisionary efforts of patristic scholars presently working on the fourth century by offering a better understanding of these two important theological parties, namely, homouseans and homoeouseans, in the fourth century. Second, it highlights the role of Hilary of Poitiers, an important ecclesiastical personality in the fourth-century but scarcely treated in modern patristic scholarship, in bringing the above mentioned two ecclesiastical groups together.”
