UST begins Lent with Ash Wednesday Mass

The Catholic Church begins the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday, held on February 10, 2016. The University of Santo Tomas commemorated the occasion with the University Mass held at the Plaza Mayor. The Concelebrated Mass was led by the Rector of the University, the Very Rev. Fr. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, OP

A revelation of belongingness
In his homily, the Rector stressed that Ash Wednesday must not be seen only as a reminder of human finitude, but as the day when Christians, through the ashes on their foreheads, say that "I belong to Christ, and I have a God, and death has no claim on me. "

This same belongingness, the Rector implored the community, must make Christians reach out to one another, particularly those struggling with their faith and those bound to their present predicaments. "The Church calls us in this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to extend to them the mercy of God ... by making them realize that as long as we have life, it is possible to start all over again."

The Mass was concelebrated by priests from the Priory of Saint Thomas Aquinas, as well as priests from other convents and provinces, the latter in town for the three-day conference with the theme "Building the Dominican Church of the Way."
