The University of Santo Tomas is home to the first comprehensive collection of natural history in the country. Fr. Casto de Elera, OP, who was the second director of the UST Natural History Museum, amassed a huge number of specimens during the 19th Century. The UST Museum currently houses Fr. De Elera’s extensive assemblage estimated to be more than 10,000 specimens of various mineral, botany, and zoology collections. Most of the specimens in the collection have never been opened to any public exhibit since the 1800’s.
As the first exhibit that will showcase
invertebrate specimens that were acquired and catalogued by Fr. de Elera, the
University of Santo Tomas Graduate School – Invertebrate Systematics and
Evolution Class, in cooperation with the UST Museum and the UST College of
Science will be holding an exhibit entitled “The Spineless Collections of Fr. Casto de Elera, OP: Reliving the
Past”. This is a natural history exhibit to be held from November 13 to 21,
2014 at the UST Main Building Lobby, España, Manila.
