2016 BS Comp. Sci. grads present theses in Japan conference

Last May 28-June 1, 2016, BS Computer Science graduates, Class 2016, presented their undergraduate theses in the 2016 International Conference on Applied System Innovation (ICASI 2016), held in Japan. The conference was organized by the Taiwanese Institute of Knowledge Innovation, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Science Education Center.
 
Two new technologies were presented, namely:
 
HeMatic: An Automated Leukemia Detector with Separation of Overlapping Blood Cells through Image Processing and Genetic Algorithm
The paper, presented by Criselle Amor P. Legaspi and Reden D. Samonte in behalf of their co-authors Reymond Joseph A. Cabrera and Erika Jasmine G. Papa, and adviser Ms. Donata D. Acula, applied the different techniques of Image Processing and Genetic Algorithm in automating the detection of Leukemia. The benchmarks in detecting Leukemia that are being used by the medical experts on a blood sample structure were taken into account.
 
The researchers created a system that accepts a blood image that undergoes selecting through color extraction, counting, and acquiring the size and Nucleus-Cytoplasm Ratio of White Blood Cells (WBCs) using Image Processing procedures. In an occurrence of overlapping cells, a pair of cells is separated in order to get a more accurate detection. Genetic Algorithm’s selection, crossover and mutation methods are utilized in producing optimal patterns of WBCs. Naïve Bayes Classifier is added to calculate the likelihood that a blood image is Leukemic or not. The system achieved a detection rate of 90.3%.
 
MarkToLock: An Image Masking Security Application via Insertion of Invisible Watermark Using Stenography and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) Algorithm
The paper, presented by Christian C. Cirineo, Roberto Jr. G. Escaro, and Jasper Bryan B. Teotico, in behalf of their co-author Christian Deiniel V. Silerio and adviser Ms. Donata D. Acula, developed an application that uses the Advanced Encryption Standards together with Least Significant Bit Steganography to encrypt and hide digital watermarks such as image, and text files in a cover image, while maintaining the accuracy of the original image, and the image produced by the system. The system takes a digital watermark and a cover image as input, use Advance Encryption Standard for encryption, and then use Least Significant Bit algorithm to hide the watermark in the cover image. The system will be evaluated to identify possible improvements in the performance of the schema and the advancements of image and graphics security computing.
