Dean Ramos, BS, MS Biology students present papers in 2016 MedLab Asia-Pacific Conference

Prof. John Donnie A. Ramos, PhD, Dean of the College of Science, presented a paper during the 2016 MedLab Asia Pacific Conference at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Singapore, held from March 22-24, 2016. Ramos presented a paper entitled “Effect of Zingiber officinale extracts and [6]-gingerol on the activity of Matrix Metalloproteinases-2, 9 (MMP-2, MMP-9) involved in vascular leakage in an in vitro model of dengue virus infection”. The paper is co-authored with his graduate student Binita Koirala Sharma.
Four BS Biology students, Astrid D. Amador, Mariah Jemm V. Amurao, Rachelle Cerila M. Heredia, and Faith Nicole B. Peñamante, presented their undergraduate thesis entitled “Immunoglobulin epsilon reactivity of Anisakis typica in a Filipino allergic population”, as a poster.  The paper is under the supervision of Ramos and Ms. Jennifer Maries G. Yap, a faculty member from the Department of Biological Sciences. The paper is co-authored with Dr. Karl Marx A. Quiazon from the College of Fisheries, Central Luzon State University. 
In the same conference, Mr. Rainier Ulrich D. Velasco, a Master of Science in Biological Sciences student at the UST Graduate School, under the supervision presented a paper entitled “Molecular Cloning and Characterization of a House Dust Mite Allergen Homologous to Cysteine Protease from Suidasia pontifica”.  As a scholar of the DOST-SEI ASTHRDP-NSC, Mr. Velasco received a travel grant from DOST. 
Medlab Asia Pacific Conference 2016, organized by Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, was participated by more than 1500 medical practitioners and researchers from various regions of Asia Pacific.  The conference featured 72 paper presentations divided into 8 sessions, 31 poster papers, and 124 commercial exhibitors.
