Australian Ambassador lauds UST, Curtin for partnership

Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Amanda Gorely lauded the signed Memorandum of Agreement between the University of Santo Tomas and Curtin University – Western Australia School of Mines for the offering of the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering major in Metallurgical Engineering commencing this academic year.

In her speech following the signing of the document, Ambassador Gorely, who is on her fifth week in the Philippines, considered the agreement a concrete example of people-to-people links that bolster the positive bilateral relations between the two countries, which agreed to have education as a major advocacy.

Ambassador Gorely underscored the value of mining engineering in particular, and the engineering practice in general, in the upliftment of the lives of communities near mining sites and the general economy, but stressed that mining must be done responsibly and with care for the environment and the community.

On a side note, Ambassador Gorely lauded the University of Santo Tomas’s BS Occupational Therapy program, which currently has an Australian scholar under its care. The program, Gorely said, was selected by the scholar following a positive encounter with Thomasians who went to Australia, and this experience solidified the student’s decision to pursue her studies in UST.
