2016 Research Fortnight opens with lecture from Sevilla, poster exhibit

The 2016 Research Fortnight, with the theme “Upholding High-Quality and High-Impact Research,” was formally opened on the morning of February 9, 2016 (Tuesday), at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex Auditorium and Lobby of the Main Building.

Increased productivity
During her Welcome Remarks, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Maribel G. Nonato, PhD enumerated the University’s achievements in terms of research, stressing that on the national level, UST has already established itself firmly as a premier research university. Cognizant of the ASEAN integration, of UST Vision 2020 calling for UST to be a premier Catholic university in Asia, and the overall thrust of internationalization, Nonato challenged researchers to increase productivity and visibility, especially when engaging with fellow scholars from different institutions.

Nonato bared the University’s strategy for research productivity in the forthcoming K-12 transition, saying that faculty researchers will be given time to do more research in the context of reduced teaching loads. New, capable, and willing faculty members will likewise be welcomed into the research fold, thereby increasing output per faculty.

High quality, high impact
In his keynote lecture, Academician Professor Emeritus Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD, longtime former Director of the old UST Research Center, traced the research fortnight’s history, from being a simple half-day research presentation to being what it is today, reflecting how research activity has increased in the decades that have passed.

This productivity, to be of high impact, must be made known to the university, the nation, and the world, through publication, colloquia, presentations during conferences, and other means.

A showcase of ongoing projects
A poster exhibit followed at the Lobby of the Main Building. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was officiated by Dr. Nonato, Dr. Sevilla, and the University Vice-Rector Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., and witnessed by the University officials, researchers, faculty members, and students.

The morning’s activities commence a two-week showcase of research productivity in the University.
