Abonador of IS, Moreno of CS clinch 2nd runner-up spot with Helpinator app

Joanouh Nathaniel Abonador, a 3rd-year BS Information Systems student, and Tricia Jasmine Moreno, a 2nd-year BS Computer Science student, both from the Institute of Information and Computing Sciences, clinched the 2nd runner-up distinction in “Hack-a-Superpower”, a competition that tackled disaster preparedness, response, and recovery during a possible alien spaceship crash.

Abonador and Moreno comprised “Team Tomas” and developed the app called “Helpinator”, which features prevention and rescue functions using the natural language processing of Watson. Through the app, users can chat with Watson to identify the nearest vital institutions, such as hospitals, evacuation sites, fire stations, etc. depending on the type of emergency.
