The UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies (UST CCWLS) in collaboration with the Linganan ng Imahen, Retorika at Anyo (LIRA) hosted a lecture titled “Siyam-siyam: Serye ng mga Panayam Hinggil sa mga Makatang LIRA” last November 11, 2015 at the Tanghalang Teresita Quirino, Benavides Building. As part of LIRA 30th anniversary celebration, the writers’ group organized a special series of lectures on LIRA poets in different universities.
“Siyam Siyam” aimed to further expand the knowledge and awareness of the public on Filipino poetry by bringing reputable poets writing in the national language closer to them. LIRA poets Rebecca Añonuevo, Roberto Añonuevo, Romulo Baquiran, Jr., Michael M. Coroza, Jerry B. Gracio, Maningning Miclat, Vim Nadera, Nick Pichay, at Edgar Calabia Samar were paired with fellow writers and academicians with a wide knowledge of their poetry, creative process and aesthetics. After the lectures, the featured LIRA poets gave their feedback on the lectures.
The UST leg featured John Enrique Torralba, who wrote a paper that discussed how Romulo Baquiran, Jr. weaves images to conjure surprisingly new ways of looking at mundane and simple things, and Vijae Orquia Alquisola, of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters, who tackled the rebellious but humorous poems of Vim Nadera, an alumnus of the UST College of Science, and former Editor-in-Chief of the UST Varsitarian.
