Engineering & Curtin University host
three-day short course on disaster preparedness
As
part of its internalization efforts, the Faculty of Engineering of the
University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines partnered with Department of
Engineering of Curtin University, Perth, Australia to deliver a short course
entitled “Civil Engineering Project, Cost
& Contractual Asset: Addressing Post-Disaster Adversity,” from May
18-20, 2015, at the Tanghalang Teresita
Quirino of the Benavides Building.
Delivering
the lectures were the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering in Curtin
University, Engr. Andrew Wythe, Ph.D., and UST’s own Civil Engineering
Department Chair, Engr. Rodelio A. Tiburcio, M.C.M.
The
program aimed to equip the participants, mostly from the different national and
regional offices of the Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways,
with sound technical know-how in order to aid their communities in managing
civil engineering assets especially after disasters, when the reactivation of
essential services and recovery of the economy are sorely needed.
The
short course was a result of the grant given by the Philippines Australia Human
Resource and Organizational Development Facility to the Department of Public
Works and Highways, who tapped the University of Santo Tomas and Curtin
University to each send an expert to deliver the said lectures.
The
University of Santo Tomas is proud to have contributed to this noteworthy
undertaking, a shining example of how two countries can help one another for
the betterment of their citizens.
