MANILA - He studied five days a week and had 7-8 hours of sleep every day. So how did University of Santo Tomas graduate Eric Talavera top the medical board exam?

Speaking to radio DZMM, Talavera said his review for the medical board didn't start after he finished his course but the year when he entered medical school.

"Four years ago, 'yun 'yung actual na simula," he said.

Talavera, who graduated summa cum laude from UST, said he enrolled in a review center for three months before the exam.

He said that while he studied for the exam five days a week, he always made sure he had weekends off so he could rest.

"I also made sure I had 7-8 hours of sleep," he said, adding that he wanted to avoid burnout.

Avoiding nights out was easy since majority of his friends were also studying for the board exam. Studying with a group also boosted his morale since he and his friends could help each other.

Talavera topped the exam with Cebu Institute of Medicine graduate Raymund Martin Li after they both got a score of 89.58 percent.

Asked about his plans, Talavera said he plans to go into either internal medicine of neurology.

Both of Talavera's parents are doctors.
