The University plans to build its own catch basin in the campus. Designed by the former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Prof. Peter Lim, the 10-meter deep catch basin is expected to withstand two hours of continuous rain; it will be will be built under Osmeña Drive, between the Parade Ground and Benavides Park.
Initially, the Department of Public Works and Highways proposed to dig the Open Field, which was declared as a National Cultural Treasure in 2010, to drain floodwater from Quezon City and Sampaloc Manila and to be discharged toward Manila Bay. The University, however, rejected the proposal due to security concerns and also the possibility of affecting classes and other activities.
Moreover, according to Fr. Rector Hermino Dagohoy, the proposal was a letter given by the DPWH Supervisor addressed to Fr. Manuel Roux, the Vice-Rector for Finance, during the time of Fr. Rolando Dela Rosa as the rector. Dagohoy said the proposal was not formal and the city government office did not submit any scientific study.
